SAD MLA Pawan Tinu demands financial aid for electrocued PSPCL employee’s family

Jalandhar, August 21, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislative Party‘s deputy leader Pawan Kumar Tinu today asked chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to immediately provide financial aid and a job to the next kin of the family of a contractual employee of PSPCL who lost his life in the line of duty even as he demanded that the contractual employees should be treated at par with the regular ones.

In a letter written to Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in this regard, the SAD leader stated that he had even submitted a call attention motion to the Vidhan Sabha Speaker on this issue and sought his permission for an in-house discussion on it during the recently concluded assembly session but the same was rejected.

“The state government should not adopt a callous approach towards the suffering of its subjects as the present case shows that the lawmakers of the ruling party take negligible interest in addressing the problems of the common man” he rued.

Giving details of the case, Mr Tinu said Sharanjit Singh, a contractual employee of PSPCL’s Bhogpur division, was electrocuted on July 8, 2019, while doing some repair work on the power transformer.

He said as per media reports death was solely caused by the negligence of a Junior Engineer (JE) who did not snap the power supply to the ill-fated transformer when the victim was climbing on to repair it. “The victim was sole the breadwinner of the family and his death has not only shattered the family but also left it on the verge of starvation” he disclosed.

Asking the state government to adopt the same set of norms for regular and contractual workers while ensuring the safety and welfare of the public workforce, the SAD leader said that the government should show zero tolerance for any kind of discrimination and exploitation at its workplaces.

He said disparity at work sends a wrong signal to the entire workforce as some workers may try to manipulate things in their favor while the others less fortunate have to pay the price, sometimes with even their lives as happened in the case of Sharanjit Singh. “Congress government should provide a job to the next kin of the deceased employee as helping citizens in distress is the State’s responsibility” he added.
