Shiromani Akali Dal president and former Deputy Chief Minister Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal today welcomed the announcement of the by-elections to the vacant seats for the Punjab legislature and said that his party ” is fully geared up and raring to go” to teach the ruling party in the state “the lesson for a lifetime.”
Mr Badal urged the Election Commission of India to keep a special watch on Punjab to ensure free and fair elections in the state in view of the fact that ‘a rootless and desperate’ ruling party here is certain to engage in foul play in a bid to escape humiliation.
“There is no such thing as the government in Punjab today. Even the Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh remains invisible knowing he cannot face the people after the manner he has remained cut ff from the state all this time. Governance is in a sorry state and people are crying even for basic amenities.
The Congress party is heading for a rout and will resort to a brazen misuse of government machinery to save itself from total elimination. The responsibility for the EC will be the highest in these circumstances, ” said the SAD president.
Mr Badal said that the cadre of his party is “excited and enthused” and has been looking forward to this announcement. They are ready to hand a crushing defeat to the ruling party, he said.Mr Badal said he would soon convene a high-level meeting of the party to finalise candidates and assign poll duties.
