The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded an independent inquiry into the drug trade across Punjab during the last two months of curfew wherein Congress ministers, legislators and leaders were found openly patronizing smugglers like Vinod Kumar alias Sonu Baba by facilitating them
with curfew passes to ensure hassle free home delivery of drugs.
In a statement here, SAD leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal said the arrest of Sonu Baba in Moga with a consignment of two thousands of Tramadol tablets had unearthed a new business started by Congressmen to earn hundreds of crores during curfew. He said sale of Tramadol was strictly restricted and there was no way such a huge quantity could be moved for distribution without political patronage from the ruling party.
Mr Maheshinder Grewal said Sonu Baba, who was known for his proximity with top Congress leaders including Capt Sandeep Sandhu, Harmimder Singh Gill and Kulbir Singh Zira, had exposed the drug racket being run by Congressmen. “Now it is clear that these drug smugglers were openly supplying drugs as well as illegal liquor to the people during curfew when the common man did not have access to even basic essentials including medicines”.
Speaking about latest seizure of Tramadol tablets from a close aide of the senior Congress leaders, Mr Grewal said it seemed that the accused Sonu Baba had been allowed to run his illegal drug trade even during the curfew as the Congress leaders were getting their share from the drug money. “An independent inquiry needs to unravel how Sonu was being helped by the Congress leaders and how the spoils from drug money were shared between them”.
Giving more details, the SAD leader said Sonu’s pictures with senior Congress leaders which had come to light showed he had family relations with them. “If a drug dealer keeps regular interactions with prominent leaders of ruling party, even attends their party as well as family events, what does that mean? It is clear that the leaders helped Sonu in his illegal activities by providing him safe passages from police and other law enforcing agencies,” he added.
Accusing Congress leaders Harminder Singh Gill and Kulbir Singh Zira of openly patronizing the drug dealer Mr Grewal said Kulbir Zira’s primary membership was cancelled for selling illicit liquor and extorting Gunda tax before it was revoked for unknown reasons by party president Sunil Jakhar. “Recently Harminder Gill was found rebuking a newly appointed SHO in a video which went viral on social media for not saluting him in person before joining duty in his constituency”.
