The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded immediate deployment of paramilitary forces in Bathinda and Ferozpur Parliament Consituencies and all sensitive booths in Punjab to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of the parliamentary elections in the state.
In a letter submitted to the Chief election commissioner of ECI, New Delhi, the SAD’s senior vice president and spokesperson Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema said the most sacrosanct feature of the election laws is to maintain level playing field for all stakeholders, including candidates.
The Election Commission of India ensures the smooth conduct of elections and electoral process is not allowed to be vitiated by any means including the misuse of official machinery to further the electoral prospects of the candidates of ruling party.
Apprising the ECI about the need of more paramilitary forces in Bathinda as well as Firozpur parliamentary constituencies, Dr. Cheema said there were 1729 booths in Bathinda and para military forces were deployed only on 700 booths.
“Similarly, para military forces are deployed on few selective booths in Firozpur parliamentary constituency while some hyper sensitive areas such as Abohar City and Firozepur city were left without any central forces.
The ruling party’s common agenda of defeating the Badal family has made these both constituencies hyper sensitive. There is urgent need of deploying para military forces on all booths across Bathinda and Firozpur constituencies” he added.
Dr. Cheema also urged the ECI to deploy para military forces on each booth in every district to ensure free and fair elections in the state as the congress party foreseeing their defeat was adopting unfair means to intimidate the voters of Punjab. “Para military forces should be deployed booth wise in all the Parliamentary Constituencies to conduct free and fair election”he added.
