Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today announced the party was committed to giving due space to women at all levels, even as he urged the Istri Akali Dal to enroll members and make preparations to contest the forthcoming local bodies and panchayat elections.
Addressing a meeting of the Istri Akali Dal along with its president Hargobind Kaur, the SAD president said “we are committed to creating a strong and robust woman leadership in the SAD and appeal to you to help us in this process”. He urged Istri Akali Dal workers to create committees at all levels so that the selection of candidates for local bodies and panchayat elections could be made from among active workers.
Mr Sukhbir Badal also suggested that the Istri Akali Dal hold a conference at Sri Muktsar Sahib prior to the Maghi Mela besides holding a separate party event to celebrate ‘dheeyan di lohri’. “Istri Akali Dal should do its best to create awareness against female foeticide as well as other social ills”. Mr Badal also suggested that the Dal hold meetings at the circle, district and state level in a phased manner after conducting a membership drive. He suggested that the membership drive could be conducted in the same manner as the current ongoing Youth Akali Dal membership drive.
Istri Akali Dal president Hargobind Kaur while briefing the SAD president said her first focus had been on establishing committees of the wing at the grass root level. “Once this was done office bearers were appointed from among the active workers. In the next phase we are concentrating on holding district level meetings to further strengthen the unit as well as making people aware of the pro-Punjab policies of the Shiromani Akali Dal”.
She said simultaneously feedback was being taken about the difficulties being faced by women in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regime. “Women are complaining that they are not getting social welfare benefits particularly old age pension and shagun benefits. There are also complaints that lakhs of aata-daal cards have been deleted. We will soon launch a movement to end this discrimination against women”, Mrs Hargobind added.
Dal workers also gave their feedback to the SAD president including suggestions that the Istri Akali Dal be actively involved in party functions. The office bearers also thanked the SAD president for taking feedback to facilitate better functioning of the party unit.
