The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to intervene immediately and ensure safe and secure stay facilities for doctors and para medical staff working at COVID – 19 centres to ensure their families were not put to any risk.
In a statement here, former minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said it was depressing to see that the Health department had not done its duty towards staff looking after COVID- 19 patients by allocating rooms to them in hostels, guest houses and hotels to ensure they did not pose a risk to their family members.
He said this demand was being raised repeatedly but since Health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu was impervious to it the chief minister should intervene in the matter immediately.
Dr Cheema said many health workers did not have separate accommodation and could not maintain adequate social distance from their near and dear ones including small children and elders.
He said many health workers were also ready to live separately from their families keeping in view the need for safety and they should be provided alternate accommodation by the State. He said other States had already taken an initiative in this regard and it was all the more important for Punjab to follow suit keeping in view that it had the highest COVID – 19 mortality rate in the country.
Dr Cheema said there were also reports of health workers fainting and unable to work without proper ventilation and air conditioning while attired in PPE kits. He said proper ventilation and temperature control should be ensured in all COVID- 19 facilities.
He also asked the State government to release pending pay of all health workers including nurses saying the State government should incentivise them on the Haryana pattern and not demoralise them by stopping their pay.
