Sacrifice of Capt Garcha will always inspire younger generations: Jalandhar DC Varinder Sharma

Deputy Commissioner Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma on Sunday paid rich tribute to martyr Captain Roopendra Singh Garcha on his 19th martyrdom day and said that supreme sacrifice made by Shaheed Captain Roopendra Singh Garcha would ever inspire our younger generations to lay down their lives for safeguarding the unity and integrity of the country.

Addressing the gathering during a function to commemorate 19th martyrdom day of Captain Garcha, who attained martyrdom while neutralizing terrorists in a search and cordon operation on June 30, 2000 in Jammu and Kashmir, the Deputy Commissioner said that the sacrifice made by this young hero of the country would ever act as a beacon to inspire the youth to follow his footsteps.

Mr Sharma said that the country would ever remain indebted to Captain Garcha who laid down his life for the nation.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the society, administration and nation will always thankful to a legendary hero who served the country with patriotic fervour to defend its sovereignty.

He also lauded the services being rendered by Captain Roopendra Singh Garcha Charitable Trust instituted by his family in the field of social welfare were really laudable.

Presiding over the function, Major General RK Singh, GOC 91 Sub Area also saluted the martyr on this momentous occasion and exhorted the youngsters to join the Indian Army.

Major General Singh further said that Punjabis were known for their courage and this rich tradition needs to be continued. Major General also complimented the organizers for holding this event which would go a long way in perpetuating the legacy of martyrs like Captain Garcha amongst the younger generations.

Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Manmohan Singh also recalled the sacrifice made by Captain Garcha at a very young age. He also thanked all the dignitaries for sparing their valuable time to attend this function.

On the occasion, students of SD Phullarwan Girls Senior Secondary School mesmerized the audience by patriotic songs.

Like every year a contingent of 323 AAD Regiment from which Captain Roopendra Singh Garcha hailed, also came all the way from Pune under Captain Sandeep Kumar to pay homage to the great martyr.

Prominent amongst included mother of Captain Garcha Mrs Harminder Kaur Garcha, brother of Captain Garcha Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner Mr Deepinder Singh Garcha, Lieutenant General (Retd.) MS Shergill, Lieutenant General (Retd.) AS Bahia, Lieutenant General (Retd.) JS Dhillon, Lieutenant General (Retd.) LS Vohra, Lieutenant General (Retd.) NS Bawa, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Gurdeep Singh, Major General Iqbal Singh, Major General Manjit Singh, Major General Amrik Singh, and families of Kargil martyrs and others paid rich tributes to the martyr.
