Following a video circulated by a local resident of Village Malukpur, District Una, on the night of October 30, 2025, regarding a suspected gas leakage from industrial units in the Nangal area, Sh Varjeet Walia, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Rupnagar, immediately constituted an inspection committee to verify the facts on the ground.
The committee, comprising SDM Nangal Sachin Pathak, Tehsildar Nangal Jasbir Singh, SHO Nangal Simranjit Singh, and officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board, inspected the premises of M/s National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) Naya Nangal, M/s Punjab Alkalies & Chemicals Limited (PACL) Naya Nangal, and M/s Flowtech Chemicals Pvt. Ltd., PACL Campus, from 10:00 PM onwards on October 30.
Upon detailed inspection, no gas leakage was detected in any of the three industrial units. The inspection team verified the sensor readings, reviewed the control room data, and physically checked the installations.
• At NFL Naya Nangal, ammonia sensors recorded readings below 25 PPM, with no leakage detected between 6 PM and 11 PM.
• At Punjab Alkalies & Chemicals Ltd., chlorine sensors showed readings below 4 PPM, confirming no chlorine emission during the period from 4 PM to 9 PM.
• At Flowtech Chemicals Pvt. Ltd., chlorine gas sensors, including one relocated near the main gate, also recorded readings below 4 PPM when checked between 6 PM and 10 PM.
The surrounding areas remained normal, and no adverse health or environmental impact was observed or reported from nearby localities.
While the findings confirm that no leakage occurred, the Deputy Commissioner has issued strict directions to all industrial units to:
• Conduct a comprehensive internal safety audit of gas handling systems,
• Ensure round-the-clock monitoring of gas sensors,
• Review and strengthen their emergency response and public alert mechanisms in coordination with the district administration and PPCB.
The Deputy Commissioner reiterated that public safety remains the top priority of the administration, and all necessary precautions are being taken to prevent any untoward incident. Citizens are advised not to panic and to rely only on verified information issued by official sources.
