Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state president and Member of Parliament (MP) from Sangrur Bhagwant Mann has raised the issue of ill-maintained roads in Punjab playing havoc on the human lives, adding that that the state figured in the listed top accidental-prone states across the country.
Raising the issue in the Parliament, Mann said that the Punjab’s killer roads (Khooni sarkan) had claimed precious human lives with the state and central government turning a Nelson’s eye to the problem of plenty.
Mann said that not a single passed when incidents of road accidents were not reported from various part of the state, with the deaf dispensation turning a blind eye to the rising incidents claiming innocent lives.
Referring to the death of stand-out comedian-turned-actor Jaspal Bhatti in a road mishap, Mann said the authorities had went in an overdrive to identify 138 ‘killer’ roads doting the length and breadth of Punjab, saying the exercise came a cropper as nothing was done by the authorities concerned.
The AAP leader said his four friends had also died in a road mishap caused by the presence of stray cattle, a problem that had taken a huge toll on human lives, alleging that both the subsequent governments lording over by the conventional parties in the state. Mann said that in most of the road-related deaths were caused by the presence of stray cattle.
Mann urged that the union government that suitable action be taken to check the recurring incidents of death on the roads by initiating measures to check them, adding that the government should mull immediate drive to identify the ‘killer’ roads in the state and make them user-friendly, thereby saving innocent lives.
Taking a serious note of the matter, Minister of Road, Transport and Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari assured Mann of suitable action in the matter surrounding safety and security of human lives.
