Thousands of Punjabis in Italy, who are in the process of receiving citizenship following an amnesty scheme announced by the Italian government, today thanked union food processing industries minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal for intervening with the Indian government and ensuring release of essential papers to them to enable them to get regularized in Italy.
The youth, who thanked Mrs Harsimrat Badal through their representatives at a function in Verona today under the aegis of the SAD NRI wing, held a video conference with Youth Akali Dal (YAD) president Parambans Singh Romana to convey their gratitude.
SAD NRI wing president Jagwant Singh while participating in the video conference said though the Italian government had announced a general amnesty after thirteen years most Punjabis living in Italy could not avail of it as they did not have the requisite Indian passport.
He said the passport of most youth had been misplaced or destroyed by agents as they had entered Italy illegally. He said Mrs Harsimrat Badal helped to circumvent this problem by taking up the issue with External Affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar.
Mr Jagwant Singh and party NRI wing general secretary Jagjit Singh said following this the Indian consulate in Italy set up help desks in league with SAD volunteers and required papers were given to Punjabis to enable them to get regularized. “We express our gratitude to Mrs Badal for this intervention”, the leaders and youth added.
While interacting with YAD President Parambans Romana, the youth said the erstwhile SAD-BJP government was known for development which they said had unfortunately come to a standstill under the Congress regime. The youth said youngsters were the most affected as they felt they did not have any future in India under the present Congress dispensation.
The YAD president said that Punjab was also suffering because the entire opposition except for the SAD had become frontal organizations of the Congress party. He said the Congress had roped in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the newly formed Dhindsa Dal to hide its failures.
Mr Romana also highlighted how the Congress was playing with the emotions of Punjabis again after having done this in 2017 also. He said the Congress government did not have any intention of giving justice in the sacrilege cases and was only playing politics on this sensitive issue to inflame passions.
He reminded the people that party President Sukhbir Singh Badal had already done ‘ardas’ that nothing should remain of those who had indulged in the sacrilege as well as of those who were behind it and those who had done politics on it. He also disclosed how recently the role of a Congress minister and a legislator had figured in the death of the prime witness in the Behbal Kalan police firing case.
Speaking about the development done during the SAD- BJP tenure, Mr Romana said besides making Punjab surplus and bringing in road projects worth Rs 46,000 crore and creating new airports and world class institutions, the erstwhile government had also taken a number of pioneering decisions concerning the welfare of NRIs.
“These include creation of NRI police stations, NRI Vacation of Property Act and working to end the Black List”. He said even now the SAD was working constantly for the welfare of NRIs. He disclosed how the party had been instrumental in the repatriation of Punjabi youth from Malaysia.
