Punjab Women Commission Chief denied permission to meet Nodeep Kaur in Karnal Jail

Manisha Gulati, the Chairperson of Punjab State Women Commission has not been granted permission to visit Karnal Jail to meet Dalit Labour Activist Nodeep Kaur.

According to a spokesperson of the Commission, the Superintendent of Karnal Jail this morning called Manisha Gulati to tell her that she would have to seek permission from Haryana Government before coming to Jail to meet Nodeep Kaur.

In an earlier release issued by Punjab Women Commission on February 12, an official spokesperson had informed that the chairperson had taken up the matter with Haryana counterpart and urged to intervene in the matter. Acting swiftly, the Haryana State Women Commission (HSWC) has issued a written instruction to Mr. Selvaraj, Director-General Jails (Haryana) to ensure legal assistance under Section 3 (10), (1) (f) (k) of the Haryana State Women Commission Act 2012 to Nodeep Kaur, a resident of Giadarh village in Sri Muktsar district of Punjab besides ensuring the safety and security of the detainee.

A spokesperson had further informed that the HSWC Chairperson has directed the Director-General Jails to make all necessary arrangements for the meeting, scheduled at 12:00 noon on February 15, of Punjab State Women’s Commission Chairperson and Nodeep Kaur. The Director-General has also been asked to submit the action taken report in this regard.

It is pertinent to mention here that Manisha Gulati had Sunday called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and taken up the matter regarding the release of Nodeep Kaur.
