Punjab Police have suspended Inspector Hardeep Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Police Station City-2, Khanna, for alleged dereliction of duty during the counting of votes for the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections.
According to official sources, Inspector Hardeep Singh was deployed at a vote-counting centre in Khanna when a confrontation broke out between Yadwinder Singh Yadu, an Akali leader, and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). During the incident, Yadu was forcibly escorted out of the counting hall and taken into police custody.
Yadwinder Singh Yadu, who serves as the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Halqa Incharge for the Khanna Vidhan Sabha constituency, was subsequently booked on charges of obstructing government work and formally arrested. He was later produced before a court, which remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
Following the incident, the Shiromani Akali Dal had warned that it would move the Punjab and Haryana High Court over the matter. However, senior police officials conducted a review of the incident and decided to place the SHO under suspension for lapses in duty during the sensitive election process.
Further departmental proceedings against the suspended officer are likely, sources said.
