Punjab Schools, Colleges & Universities to Reopen from September 9 After Flood Closure

After days of disruption caused by floods, the Punjab government has announced that all schools, colleges, and universities across the state will reopen from September 9. The decision was confirmed by Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains through an official social media post on Sunday.

Teachers to Inspect School Buildings on September 8

Before the resumption of classes, all government school teachers have been directed to attend their respective schools on September 8. On this day, the focus will remain on cleaning, safety inspections, and structural checks of the school premises. Teachers will conduct inspections along with the support of School Management Committees (SMCs), Panchayats, Municipal Councils, and Corporations.

If any structural issue or safety concern is identified, it must be immediately reported to the Deputy Commissioner and the district’s Engineering Department for corrective action.

Decision-Making in Flood-Affected Districts

While institutions across Punjab will reopen as scheduled, in flood-affected districts and areas, the final decision regarding closures will rest with the respective Deputy Commissioners.

Key Instructions Issued by the Education Minister

1. Reopening Date: All government, private, and aided schools, colleges, and universities in Punjab will reopen from September 9, unless specifically affected by floods.
2. Private School Responsibility: Administrators of private institutions must ensure that their buildings and classrooms are completely safe for both students and teachers.
3. Government Schools: Closed for students on September 8, but teachers must be present for cleaning and inspection.
4. Safety Inspections: Any structural problems found must be reported without delay to the concerned district authorities.
5. Final Reopening: All government schools will reopen for students from September 9.

Background

Earlier, on September 3, the Punjab Government had extended the closure of all educational institutions—including government, aided, recognised, and private schools, colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutes—till September 7, citing heavy rainfall and the ongoing flood situation.

With floodwaters now receding, the state is preparing to restore normal academic activities, though safety remains the top priority.
