Punjab Press Club seeks action against Chandigarh cop for maltreatment of Sr Journalist

Jalandhar, April 19, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)
The Punjab Press Club has strongly condemned the highly unwarranted action of the Chandigarh Police to illegaly detain senior reporter of Punjabi Tribune, Devinder Pal last evening.

The act of the police speaks volumes about the colonial mindset of the Chandigarh Police in dealing with the mediaperson, who was simply walking to his office wearing his ID card. The cops showed utter disregard to the fact that the mediapersons are allowed to perform their duties amid lockdown and hurled mouthful of abuses on him.

Treating him like any hardened criminal, they even dragged and bundled him into their vehicle, took him to a police station and made him to sit on the floor there to insult him. Since Devinder Pal managed to send messages to his colleagues about the incident well in time, who further took up the matter with high ups, he was set free but no action has come against the erring cops.

The Punjab Press Club Jalandhar demands strictest action against the policemen who attempted to lower the dignity of a senior mediaperson for no fault of his. One can also understand that if Chandigarh Police can humiliate and harrass a journalist like this even as he showed his identity card, how much ruthless they can be with other citizens.

While lodging a complaint on the issue with the UT administration, the Punjab Press Club has also sought intervention of the PMO into the matter as the very act of the cops is against the lockdown guidelines issued by the Centre.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in all his addresses since the lockdown, has been showering praises on mediapersons for continuing to perform their duties in tough times but his underlined message perhaps has not been understood by the UT Police so far.
