Punjab Pollution Control Board Stands Committed to Robust Health of People & Ecological Safety

Chandigarh, September 15, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

In line with its commitment to ensuring environmentally responsible industrial practices, the Board carried out a comprehensive inspection of all Tyre Pyrolysis Oil (TPO) Units across the State.

As many as 17 teams comprising officers of the rank of Environmental Engineer were deployed to conduct a synchronized inspection of 17 operational TPO units located in different districts of Punjab.

According to an official spokesperson, the inspections were aimed at assessing compliance with environmental safeguards, safety protocols and pollution control measures mandated under the law and prescribed guidelines.

The inspection revealed that 11 out of 17 units were not in compliance with the prescribed safeguards. Common violations included Lack of adequate air pollution control devices, Unsafe handling of pyro gas, Improper char disposal, and Deficiencies in effluent management.

Taking a strict view of these violations, PPCB has initiated action against the non-complying units, notices have been issued.

The Punjab Pollution Control Board reiterated its resolve to ensure that industrial growth in the State goes hand-in-hand with sustainable development and ecological safety. The board stands determined to the adoption of safe technologies by the industries, added the spokesperson.

Tyre pyrolysis involves processing waste tyres in oxygen-free conditions to produce Tyre Pyrolysis Oil (TPO) and carbon black as a by-product. If not operated as per prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the State Government, these units can cause serious environmental hazards—such as black smoke emissions, unsafe handling of pyro gas and improper disposal of char and effluents.
