Punjab: Over Two Dozen Shots Fired at Youth by Car-Borne Assailants; Police Launch Probe

Jalandhar, June 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A young man sustained serious injuries after unidentified car-borne assailants allegedly opened fire on him in Jalandhar on Wednesday morning, triggering panic in the area and prompting a major police investigation.

The victim, identified as Rahul, a resident of Arya Nagar, was reportedly on his way to a gurdwara along with friends when he was intercepted by armed attackers near Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar at around 6:00 a.m.

According to preliminary information, the assailants arrived in two vehicles and allegedly fired multiple rounds at Rahul. Eyewitness accounts suggest that nearly 25 rounds were fired during the attack, though police are yet to officially confirm the exact number of shots.

Rahul suffered a bullet injury to his abdomen and was rushed to Satyam Hospital in Jalandhar, where he is undergoing treatment. While initial reports described his condition as critical, police later indicated that he was stable and receiving medical care.

Old Rivalry Angle Under Investigation

Investigators are examining whether the attack was linked to an earlier violent incident in the Maqsudan Sabzi Mandi area, where a youth identified as Satta was killed some time ago.

Police sources said all possible angles are being investigated, including the possibility of retaliatory violence stemming from previous disputes.

Some unverified reports circulating locally claimed that the attackers were led by an individual identified as Amarjit Singh Nihang along with his associates. However, police have not officially confirmed the involvement of any suspect and are continuing their investigation.

Police Launch Investigation

Personnel from Basti Bawa Khel Police Station were among the first responders to reach the scene. The spot was also inspected by Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Rakesh Yadav.

Although the incident occurred in an area that falls under the jurisdiction of Police Station Division No. 1, officers from multiple units participated in the initial response and evidence collection.

Speaking to the media, Jai Inder Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of the concerned police station, said that a thorough investigation was underway and that the victim’s condition had shown signs of improvement.

Police sources indicated that a case of attempt to murder is being registered under the relevant provisions of law. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage and gathering forensic evidence from the crime scene to identify and trace the attackers.

The incident has once again raised concerns over gun violence and gang-related activity in the region, with residents demanding swift action against those responsible.
