In a significant development, Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains has accepted full moral responsibility for a controversial event organized by the State Language Department in Srinagar to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji. The Akal Takht has summoned him and Director Jaswant Singh to appear before the assembly of the five Singh Sahiban on August 1, 2025 at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, to explain their roles in the event.
Background: Controversial Event & Community Backlash
The event in Srinagar reportedly included singing and dance performances, widely criticized by the Sikh community and political parties alike for being disrespectful to the solemn occasion of martyrdom. Opposition groups like Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP called the program “deeply insensitive,” accusing the AAP-led government of dishonoring Sikh traditions
Officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj expressed serious concern over the lack of apology or clarification from Jathedar Bains or the Language Department Director. “Respect for Guru Sahib’s legacy is non-negotiable,” he stressed, describing the
+entertainment-based inauguration as a first in Sikh history—markedly inappropriate for such a sacred commemoration
Minister Harjot Singh Bains’ Response
In a heartfelt message shared via social media, Harjot Singh Bains stated:
“Every Sikh bows with reverence before the true throne of Sri Akal Takht Sahib… As a Sikh cabinet minister, I accept all responsibility for what was organized, knowingly or unknowingly.”
He confirmed he has been summoned by Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and pledged to appear barefoot and obedient, fully prepared to abide by every directive of the sacred institution babushahi.com+1babushahi.com+1.
Bains further clarified that the event was meant to feature learned scholars discussing the life and sacrifice of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, including an invitation to Punjabi singer Bir Singh, known for his religious compositions. Bir Singh has reportedly tendered an apology, which will also be reviewed during the forthcoming assembly
Upcoming Assembly at Akal Takht
The meeting slated for August 1, 2025, will include deliberation over this controversy and broader Panthic issues.
Giani Gargajj reiterated that failure to address these matters promptly raises concerns when constitutional authorities remain silent on sensitive religious issues.
