Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi gives Scholarships of Rs. 1,20,000 each to 10 young artists

Under the helm of its President, celebrated artist Diwan Manna, Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi is turning a new leaf with host of interesting events including Scholarships for young artists. He had, earlier in 2008 as Chairman of Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi, started similar schemes there as well.

Addressing a press conference at the Akademi’s Sector 16 office at Punjab Kala Bhawan, he announced that the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi had introduced Scholarships in 2017 and has continued it with the selection of ten talented young artists from Punjab for the year 2019.

Each scholarship holder would get Rs. 1,20,000/- (Rupees one lakh twenty thousand).

In order to contribute to society, the scholarship holders will conduct a two-day art workshop at a Government Primary/ Middle/ High School or in a college in their native place in Punjab.

They will also participate in an Artist in Residence programme during which they will be mentored by a senior artist for experimentation, dialogue, and interactions allowing for self-discovery. The program is aimed to create an immersive and intellectually stimulating environment generating a fresh perspective towards contemporary art practice. The residency will culminate in the form of Open Studios showcasing the artworks created by the Scholarship holders for public viewing.

Announcing the names of the recipients of these scholarships by Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, Manna introduced the budding artists to media persons, who have been selected after one to one interviews by internationally renowned artists Bose Krishnamachari, Founder Chairman, Kochi Muziris Biennale, Sudarshan Shetty, curator of Kochi Muziris Biennale 2016 and Curator Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa 2019, and G R Iranna another celebrated artist.

For most of the applicants interacting with these icons of Indian Art was a life time experience irrespective of the fact whether they were selected for the scholarship or not.

The scholarships are being given to budding artists, between 20 and 30 years of age.

One of the Scholarships of Rs. 1,20,000/- is sponsored by Mrs. Zoya Reikhi Sharma and Mr. Chaman Sharma.

Interview process involved going through the portfolios of the artists, looking at the original art works and knowing about the artistic, intellectual and craftsmanship skills of the artists. 28 artists from Punjab and Chandigarh were shortlisted for the interviews out of the total 98 applicants.

The scholarships are being named after living and past legends from the field of art of Punjab.

The past legends in whose names the scholarships are being given are: Amrita Sher-Gil, Dr. M S Randhawa, Dr. Mulk Raj Anand, Dhanraj Bhagat and Manjit Bawa.

The living senior personalities from the field of art in whose name these scholarships are being given are: Krishen Khanna, Satish Gujral, Prof. B N Goswamy, Paramjit Singh and Raghu Rai.
