Punjab industrialists face FIR threat: SAD asks Capt Amarinder to clarify apprehensions

Chandigarh, April 20, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to clarify apprehensions of industrialists who were being threatened with FIRs in case of any COVID-19 infection in their premises, even as he asked him to do away with confusing signals which were coming in the way of opening the industrial sector in Punjab.

In a statement here, former minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said various district administrations had told industrialists that an FIR would be registered against them if there was any case of COVID-19 infection in their premises.

“This is one of the major reasons why industrialists are not taking the risk of restarting operations. On the one hand the government has asked industrialists to start their units. On the other hand it is taking anti-industry decisions. It should ask the industry to take due precautions to make their premises hygienic. However industrialists should not be held accountable in case of any COVID infection in their premises.

Dr Daljit Cheema said if the present decision to hold industrialists responsible for infections was not done away with it would lead to the flight of labour from the State. He said the chief minister had appealed to migrant workers to remain in the State and assured them work in factories. “However the government itself is coming in the way of start of industrial operations and imposing clauses which are seen as detrimental to the interests of the State”.

Dr Cheema said this was not all. He said confusing signals were emanation from the headquarters in Chandigarh with multiple authorities issuing different statements. He said due to this implementation had suffered at the ground level and there seemed to be a policy paralysis.

He said Punjab would suffer due to this and the economy would not be revived soon. “Other States have already taken effective steps to kickstart industrial operations. Punjab should also facilitate the industrial sector by extending a helping hand to the sector during this difficult time”, he added.
