Punjab gears up for massive community participation for Plastic Waste Shramdaan on 2nd October

Joining the nationwide campaign to get rid of Single Use Plastic (SUP), the State has geared up its machinery for massive community mobilization regarding plastic waste shramdaan slated for 2nd October 2019, with a view to making Punjab free from SUP.

The State Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh today held a meeting with the departments of Environment, Local Government, Rural Development & Panchayats and Punjab Pollution Control Board to chalk out a comprehensive strategy for tackling the menace of plastic pollution under the umbrella of “Mission Tandrust Punjab”.

Keeping in view the wide ranging environmental and health hazards of plastic pollution, the State has decided to elicit massive public participation as a noble initiative to create awareness amongst masses about the ill-effects of plastic pollution to mark the occasion of 550th Prakash Purb of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Divulging details of the meeting an official spokesperson said that deliberations were aimed at strategizing an action plan to garner public support and involvement to make this movement a grand success across the state. The Local Government was directed to evolve a strategy for effective execution of programme at ward level. Likewise, the Rural Development and Panchayats Department would also spearheaded the drive in the Rural areas.

Similarly, the Punjab Pollution Control Board was directed to being awareness amongst the people to publicise the obligations under Rules and the specific single use plastic items to be discouraged under the ban, as well as the alternatives among the public through every possible communication medium.
