Punjab Congress to explore feasibility of challenging legal validity of Modi Govt.’s anti-farmer ordinance: Jakhar

Litran (Jalandhar), July 8, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

The President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and former Lok Sabha Member Mr Sunil Jakhar today said that the state Congress would explore the feasibility of challenging the validity of Ordinances being brought by Modi Government as it was in violation of basic spirit of Indian constitution.

Chairing a congregation of the farmers here at the village Litran, the Punjab Congress Chief, accompanied by Chairman of Water Resources Management Corporation Mr Jagbir Singh Brar, said that Agriculture was part of the state list under the Indian constitution and only state governments have the right to frame laws on this subject. He said that the Union Government led by PM Mr Narinder Modi has no right to frame any law on this subject. Mr Jakhar said that as it violates the basic spirit of the Indian constitution so the state government was exploring the viability to challenge it in the apex court.

The Punjab Congress Chief said that the ordinance was aimed at breaking the backbone of the food growers of the country. He said that the move to stop the government purchase of food grains was aimed at making the food growers a puppet in the hands of the private players, to whom the BJP Government desired to extend the largesse.

Mr Jakhar said that the move was a direct assault on the farmers of Punjab, who have exhausted their only available natural resources in terms of fertile soil and underground water to provide food grains to country.

The Punjab Congress President further said that Akalis were more concerned about enjoying the fruits of power rather than protecting the interests of the state and its people. He said that on one hand Congress was fighting for the rights of Punjabis whereas on the other hand Akalis have became puppets in the hand of NDA Government. Mr Jakhar said that it was the high time that all the political parties of state must join hands for safeguarding the rights of farmers of the state.

Training his guns on Akali Dal for betraying the farming community, the Punjab Congress Chief said that the Akalis have already backstabbed Sikh panth as series of incident of desecration had taken place during their tenure and now they were hell bent on ditching the farmers. He said that Akalis for the sake of clinging to the power in NDA Government had mortgaged the interests of the state.

The Punjab Congress Chief asked the Akalis that what bad Punjab has done to them that they were ruining the state by trying to jeopardise their state’s share of fund from the Centre Government. He asked them to explain what they have got for the state from the Union Government. Mr Jakhar said that instead of indulging in theatricals like staging protest Akalis must support the state government to ensure that the government purchase of grains was not stopped.

The Punjab Congress Chief said that in such dismissal circumstances the only silver lining for Punjab was the state government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. He said that despite of Covid 19 pandemic the state government has procured and lifted 1.27 crore lakh metric ton. Mr Jakhar expressed hope that Chief Minister, who was known as saviour of water of Punjab, would take every step to safeguard the interests of farmers of Punjab.

On the occasion Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar Chaudhary Santokh Singh, MLAs Mr Pargat Singh, Mr Rajinder Beri and Mr Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia, Chairman Punjab water Resources Management Corporation Mr Jagbir Singh Brar, Mr Paramjit Singh Raipur besides others also slammed the Modi government for conspiring to break the backbone of the farmers. They called upon the people to vehemently oppose the anti farmer ordinances of Modi government.
