Punjab Congress takes serious view of allegations leveled by Patiala MLAs, Jakhar to raise issue with CM

Taking cognizance of serious allegations levelled by some legislators at the District Grievances Committee meeting in Patiala, PPCC president Mr. Sunil Jakhar on Wednesday categorically stated that the constitutional accountability of the administration to the people and their elected representatives will be maintained at all costs as they represent the people and raise their problems. Congress is committed to eradicate corruption and if such situation happens in Patiala district it becomes more serious and it will not be tolerated anywhere.

Responding to the questions raised by media on Patiala episode at his native village, Panjkosi today, Mr. Jakhar said bureaucrats need to behave with elected representatives in a dignified manner not only during the meetings of the District Grievances Redressal Committee but also in their respective offices also. The officers need to mend their ways and solve genuine problems of the people at initial level since people are more important for Congress.

Recommending to Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh a high level inquiry into the issues raised by the Patiala district legislators, he said whosoever is found guilty, should be given an exemplary punishment. He said that people are important in democracy and if an official fails in providing timely attention, the Congress led government will take strict action against him.

He said the issue will be raised with the CM to ensure prevent reoccurrence of such controversies. Congress came in power with assurance to weed out corruption, we must take strong action if cases violating our assurance surface. Each complaint should be verified to ascertain complacency.

Debating another important issue that some legislators had recently raised on different platforms, PPCC president called upon the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee to abolish monopoly of a specific channel on live telecast of Gurbani Kirtan from Darbar Sahib Amritsar.

Other TV channels should be allowed to telecast Gurbani live from Golden Temple and the revenue generated by the SGPC should be utilised to facilitate economically weak pilgrims to pay visa fee to use corridor. He reiterated that the process for pilgrimage through Dera Baba Nanak- Kartarpur Sahib corridor should be simplified and the SGPC need to organise camps in the villages to assist people apply for pilgrimage.

Describing the demise of a Dalit youth due to torture in Sangrur district as heinous and most unfortunate, Mr Jakhar said bad elements have no religion. The state government will do its best to ensure speedy justice to the victim’s family. He questioned the Akali and BJP leaders for politicizing the incident for petty mileage.

He recalled that a Dalit youth Bhim tank was brutally murdered in Abohar in December 2015. “I had to reach the then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal repeatedly to get just Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the bereaved family. Senior SAD and BJP leaders did nothing to get the amount of compensation enhance; they could not spare time even to visit the family to express condolences, he said.

The PPCC president suggested the government should make a consistent policy on such incidents so that the victims’ families get proper compensation and timely justice. On this occasion, former District Youth President Mr. Sandeep Jakhar was also present.
