The scheduled Punjab Cabinet meeting, originally set for 10:30 AM on Monday, July 7, has been officially rescheduled to 6:00 PM on the same day, according to government sources.
The rescheduled meeting comes ahead of a significant two-day special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, set for July 10 and 11, where the AAP-led government is expected to introduce stringent legislation on sacrilege of religious scriptures and deliberate extensively on the state’s ongoing drug crisis.
During the Cabinet meeting, ministers are expected to formally approve the session dates. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has been vocal about the urgency of tackling the drug menace and bringing “big fish” involved in drug trafficking to justice.
The special assembly session is also expected to highlight the state’s enforcement actions against drug networks, especially in light of the recent arrest of senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia on June 25 in a disproportionate assets and drug-related investigation.
Sources close to the government reveal that the session will serve as a platform for open political debate, inviting the opposition to present their stance. The ruling AAP has criticized opposition parties, particularly for their alleged defense of Majithia, despite their long-standing demand for stricter drug enforcement.
Interestingly, since the last assembly session on May 5 was not formally prorogued, the government does not require the Governor’s approval to convene the upcoming session.
With emotionally charged issues like religious sacrilege and narcotics control on the agenda, the coming days are set to shape the state’s legislative and political discourse significantly.
