Populist schemes would cause irreparable damage to fund-starved Punjab: Partap Bajwa

Chandigarh, December 7, 2022 (Yes Punjab News)
Expressing serious concern over the populist schemes that were announced by the Bhagwant-led Aam Aadmi Party government before the elections, Senior Congress Leader and Punjab’s Leader of Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday said that with such schemes the state’s economy would only sustain irreparable damages.

Bajwa said that the populist schemes would cost the debt-ridden state dearly. Such ill-conceived schemes would do more damage to the fiscal health of Punjab than repair it. It has already been estimated in the media reports that both schemes including free power schemes and financial aid of Rs 1,000 per month for every woman over 18 years of age are expected to put an additional burden of at least Rs 20,600 crore a year.

“The consequences of the free power scheme of the AAP government have started coming to the fore. As per a news report, 87 percent of the total 74 lakh domestic consumers in Punjab got ‘zero bills’ in November, which would further cause severe losses to the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), which has already been facing financial deprivation”, said LoP.

In a statement, Bajwa said that in order to woo the voters before the Punjab assembly elections in February 2022, AAP supremo and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had assured that he would shut down the illegal sand mining, which would consequently generate 20,000 crores in revenue that would benefit the people. He made similar claims to improve the financial situation of the state by ending corruption.

“Meanwhile, all his commitments and guarantees have proven futile as the AAP government has ended up managing essential activities in the state on borrowed money and loan. According to the RBI, Punjab has accumulated a debt of Rs 3 lakh crore in 2021-22”, said Bajwa, who is also an MLA from the Qadian assembly segment.

He said that for the state’s economic revival, three prominent economists of Punjab have already demanded a special economic package in the forthcoming budget for 2023-24 from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
