The 55th Annual Athletic Meet, organized by the Directorate of Students’ Welfare, kicked off at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today.
Dr Kiranjeet Kaur Gill, Member, PAU Board of Management, who was the chief guest of the inaugural session, said that participation in sports inculcates self-discipline and competitive spirit, as well as boosts confidence in youth. Participation is more important than winning, she said, while adding that sports encourages youth to work hard, harder and hardest. Congratulating the prize winners and the participants, she said that present times call for enhanced participation in sports and games in view of health diseases cropping up.
Sardar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Police Commissioner, Ludhiana, presided over the prize-distribution ceremony. Lauding the active participation in sports activities, he said that sports are essential for healthy mind and body.
In his welcome address, Dr GS Buttar, Director Students’ Welfare, said that PAU has been credited with producing three Hockey Olympians and famous sportspersons, who have made a mark in the international arena. He urged the youth to participate in sports events with true spirit of sportsmanship.
Students from five constituent colleges of PAU, namely College of Agriculture (COA), College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (COAET), College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (COBSH), College of Community Science (COCS) and College of Horticulture and Forestry (COHF) participated in various sports events.
Present on the occasion were Dr Ashok Kumar, Director of Extension Education; Dr MIS Gill, Dean, College of Horticulture and Forestry; Dr RK Dhaliwal, Ex-Director Students’ Welfare; Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication; Dr Kuldeep Singh, Associate Director (Skill Development); Dr OP Choudhary, Head, Department of SOil Science and Dr Ramnadeep Singh, Director, School of Business Studies.
