PAU Soil Scientist Dr SS Dhaliwal conferred with prestigious National Award

Dr SS Dhaliwal, Principal Soil Chemist, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has been conferred with distinguished “Dr JSP Yadav Memorial National Award 2022” for excellence in research on micronutrients. The award was bestowed upon Dr Dhaliwal by Dr SK Chaudhary, Deputy Director General, ICAR, during the 86th Annual Convention of Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS), held at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV), Rahuri, Maharashtra from November 15-18, 2022.

The award comprises a gold medal and citation certificate for his outstanding achievements for “Excellent Research on Micronutrients Bio-fortification and Development of Technology for the Farmers of Punjab State.” Dr Dhaliwal is an Ex-Incharge of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Micronutrients, Secondary and Pollutants Elements Scheme (MSPE) in the Department of Soil Science.

Dr Dhaliwal is known for believing in Strengthening Team Work (SITW) and has a vast experience in discharging duties in different capacities including as Incharge, Micronutrients Project (AICRP-MSPE) and Soil Testing Project for Micronutrients under Farmers Service Scheme (FSS). Prior to this, he has served in three AICRP (ICAR) projects in different capacities viz.

AICRP-for dryland agriculture, AICRP- for forage crops and AICRP- for cropping systems research. Besides, he has played a pivotal role in generating huge funds for micronutrients through adhoc projects. He has also handled four adhoc research projects, sanctioned by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), as Principal Investigator and 16 adhoc projects as Co-Principal Investigator.

Apart from this, Dr Dhaliwal has served as a visiting scientist at the University of Florida, USA in 2009, where he worked on “Developing guidelines and re-capitalization of micronutrient fertility through management of organic wastes (biosolids)”.

In addition, he has more than 415 publications including 245 research papers in reputed national and international journals, 54 extension publications,12 authored/edited books, 24 review papers and book chapters, and 78 proceeding papers in national and international convocations/conferences.

Based on his marvelous research work and technology generated, 16 recommendations were added in Packages of Practices of PAU. His book “Status of Sulphur and Micronutrients in Soil of Punjab – Blockwise Atlas” has been included in Farmers Soil Testing Report for micronutrients.

A recipient of four gold medals and citations, Dr Dhaliwal is highly decorated with several prestigious awards including two International Zinc Awards awarded by International Zinc Association and Fertilizers Association of India (IZA-FAI); Best International Scientist Award 2021 by International Research Association (IRA), England; and Best Outstanding Researcher National Award 2021 by Kamarajar Institute of Education and Research (KIER).

He has also received Certification of Appreciation alongwith with a memento and Gold Medal for outstanding performance in research for the year 2021. Besides, he was adjudged as the Best PAU Teacher 2018-19, and awarded Chaudhary Devi Lal Award for AICRP-Micronutrients scheme in 2016.

The PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal; Director of Research Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt; Additional Director of Research (Natural Resource and Plant Health Management) Dr PPS Pannu; Additional Director Communication Dr TS Riar and Head of Department of Soil Science Dr RK Gupta congratulated Dr Dhaliwal for this achievement and wished him success for future endeavors.
