PAU Scientist Dr Parveen Chhuneja elected as NAAS Fellow

Dr (Mrs) Parveen Chhuneja, Director, School of Agricultural Biotechnology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has been elected as Fellow (Crop Sciences) of highly prestigious National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) within two weeks of her election as Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI).

This recognition has been bestowed upon her for excellent scientific contributions in the field of Agricultural Biotechnology. This is a rare delight for Punjab Agricultural University for its scientist having received recognition by two top national science academies of India within a fortnight.

Dr Chhuneja has been decorated with this national recognition for her outstanding research work on wheat improvement through introgression of large number of economically important genes from wild relatives of wheat. Five of the genes identified by her have been designated at the international level.

Her work focuses on utilizing advanced genomic technologies for developing DNA markers linked to the genes for disease resistance, grain protein content, heat tolerance, etc. She has been involved in the development of seven wheat varieties developed using DNA markers. Besides, she has published 125 research papers in international and national journals.

She is also a recipient of Outstanding Woman Scientist Awards at the national level by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, as well as by the Society for Wheat and Barley Research; Dr Gurdev Singh Khush Distinguished Professor Award by the PAU; Merit and Plaque as Best Researcher by the PAU; and International Gene Stewardship Team Award by Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI).

The Vice Chancellor of PAU Sh DK Tiwari, IAS, Financial Commissioner (Development), Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and the Director of Research Dr Ajmer Dhatt congratulated Dr (Mrs) Chhuneja for the outstanding national recognition, bringing in the great honors to the PAU.
