PAU marks 103 Years of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

Marking 103 years of Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a play “Main Jallianwala wala Bagh bolda hain” was staged at Dr Manmohan Singh Auditorium of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The play was directed by Dr Anil Sharma, Assistant Director, TV/radio, PAU. Teaching, non-teaching staff and student fraternity of PAU attended the play enactment in big number.

Dr GS Buttar, Director Students’ Welfare, said that such plays made the students aware of the dark days in the history of Punjab and India. While paying tributes to the martyrs, he stated that in the near future, more such efforts will be made to create awakening among the youth about the historical happenings.

Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication, said that the scarifies made by the martyrs on April 13, 1919 at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar can never be forgotten. It depicted the courage of the unarmed people who fought the British tyranny with great valour 103 years ago, he added.

Prof Gurbhajan Gill, former Senior Editor (Punjabi), while lauding the enactment of play, said that it was vital to motivate the youth through this freedom struggle, where hundreds of lives were sacrificed. “The University has great produced scientists, sportspersons, litterateurs and artists,” he added, while congratulating the University for keeping the spirit of art and science, set by former PAU VC Dr MS Randhawa alive in the University.

Dr JS Dhiman, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda and former Additional Director Communication, PAU, stressed upon connecting youth with the history and called for enacting such plays in different parts of India.

According to Dr Sharma, whose script of the play was also released, said that a total of 70 students participated in the play. These comprised Abhishek Vij (General Dyer), Harjoban Virk (Bhagat Singh), Karanvir Gill (Sukhdev), Saurav Bassi (Rajguru), Vishal (Chandarshekhar Azad), Yashmilan Kaur (Bhagat Singh’s Mother), Laksahy (Udham Singh), Renu ( junior Udham Singh) and Nitin Sapra (Jallianwala Bagh). Prabhjot Singh Sanghera (stage decoration) and Zimmy Jatinder and Harmeet Singh (music) also contributed to the play.

Mr Gurpreet Singh Virk, Welfare Officer (Boys), conducted the programme.
