Patiala Sessions Judge Rajinder Aggarwal releases 2nd issue of ‘Punjab Ujala’ Magazine

Continuing its unique initiative of turning the creative work of inmates into a magazine by Central Jail Patiala, the second issue of quarterly magazine ‘Punjab Ujala’ (Sochan di Udaan) was released, today, by District and Sessions Judge Mr Rajinder Aggarwal.

Addressing the gathering of officails and inmates, District and Sessions Judge Rajinder Aggarwal said that the views expressed by the inmates in this magazine were a testament to their inner talent.

He hoped that such initiatives would help in connecting the prisoners with the mainstream of society and would lead them towards ideological change by connecting them with literature.

He said that the magazine should also be sent to libraries, schools and colleges so that the people could be made aware of the positive writings of the jail inmates. On this occasion, he listened to the grievances of the prisoners and resolved the grievances on the spot.

During the function, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Ms Parminder Kaur, CJM, apprised the prisoners about their legal rights and also about the free legal services provided by the authority.

On this occasion, the Superintendent of Central Jail, Shivraj Singh Nandgarh said that the inmates of the jail have been engaged in various occupations so that their talents could be further honed. He said that women prisoners in the jail were being taught to make jute goods so that they could start their own business after their release. Poems, songs and bhangra were also performed by the inmates during the function.

Elaborating further, on the content of ‘Sochan di Udaan’ published in Punjab Ujala Magazine, Jail Superintendent Shivraj Singh Nandgarh said that the magazine, based on poems and articles by the inmates, was the result of positive work of the inmates.

He said that a small library has also been set up inside the jail to encourage the inmates to read literature, where besides books, literature on other subjects has also been provided by the jail authorities. Civil Judge (Senior Division) Monika Sharma and CJM Amit Malhan were also present on the occasion.
