The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today said the prison break in Patiala in which three prisoners, including one who had been deported from the United Kingdom, had made a daring escape was a direct result of the policy of patronage to criminals by the Congress government. It demanded that Jails minister Sukhjinder Randhawa be dismissed immediately.
In a statement here, former minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said criminals had become emboldened to such an extent that they were running extortion rackets from jails besides presiding over kidnappings and even targeted killings. “This is the reason that there have been a number of jail escapes with prisoners escaping from the Ludhiana and Amritsar central jails also last year”.
He said there was also an incident of a virtual riot in the Ludhiana jail besides a case of cases of sodomy of jail inmates in league with jail officials to extort money from them. “The law of the jungle is prevailing in jails in Punjab”, he added.
Stating that the Congress government had vitiated the atmosphere in State jails, Dr Cheema said underworld dons and gangsters were being given VIP treatment at the instance of top most Congress leaders due to which the jail administration had become powerless to act against them.
He said the manner in which the Congress government hosted Uttar Pradesh don Mukhtiar Ansari in VVIP comfort in Ropar jail for two years was a case in point.
He said similarly gangsters were given a free run to use mobile phones and even hold birthday parties as was seen in the case of gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria. “Drugs are freely available in jails and the government has been unable to put a stop to this menace”.
Asserting that chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh should take note of the deteriorating situation in jails in Punjab, Dr Cheema said Jails minister Sukhjinder Randhawa should be dismissed immediately.
“Simultaneously stringent measures should be taken to deny use of mobile phones to gangsters besides keeping a check on their illegal activities from the jail premises”.
