Parties, Politicians supporting Triple Talaq eyeing vote-bank, have no concern for Muslim women: Tarun Chugh

Chandigarh, August 19, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

Lashing out at parties and politicians supporting Triple Talaq BJP today accused these forces of eyeing vote-bank at the cost of Muslim women and children.

Tarun Chugh, the national secretary of the party said, even Islamic countries have done away with the obsolete law which did injustice to Muslim women nearly 56 years ago.

“The successive Congress governments however decided to continue with the anti-woman law as part of its appeasement policy,” he said.

Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Chugh said they have paved way for restoration of dignity of Muslim women by bringing in the act against Triple Talaq. “Even the Quran does not endorse Triple Talaq,” he said.

The BJP leader said that Rajiv Gandhi-led Congress government in the centre had overturned the order of the Apex Court in Shahbano Case thereby leaving all Muslim women to cope up with the curse of Triple Talaq.

“All the world had seen how the Congress, which otherwise claims to be liberal and secular and their allies the Leftists who claim to be progressive stood with the oppressors rather than siding with the oppressed,” Chugh said.

Chugh said, the country had in the past done away with ‘Sati Pratha’, child marriage and always advocated for putting an end to the custom of dowry but Congress did not vouch for the principle of equality and in fact denied them their basic right of justice.

Commenting on the provision of punishment in the newly passed Triple Talaq bill, Chugh said it would instill confidence in the women and make marriages safer and permanent. Those who would like to misuse the Triple Talaq, will now have to face the law and they won’t go scot-free as it used to be earlier.

Chugh slammed Ghulam Nabhi Azad, the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha for opposing the new Act. The BJP leader said it was sad that besides being a Muslim, Azad was arguing that the Muslim women, under the new act, would not be eligible to get maintenance.

“In fact, it is the other way round. As Triple Talaq won’t exist now, the responsibility of the woman and her children, after the divorce, would lie on the man, who would have to give maintenance,” he said.
