The Punjab Vidhan Sabha will be holding a constitutionally mandated single day session tomorrow (28.08.20). Numerous issues that affect the State of Punjab have arisen since March, 2020, including the anti-farmer ordinances and the power reforms under the economic relief package announced by the Union Government.
These actions will fundamentally harm Punjab. It is my firm belief that the response from the Vidhan Sabha must be unanimous in rejecting these actions of the Central Government. A truncated single-day session of the Legislative Assembly, without attendance from the opposition parties would be unfortunate. If the State of Punjab wishes to send a clear message to the Government of India on these issues, it must stand united.
Due to the health protocols in effect, MLA’s who were in contact with those who tested positive for COVID19, during various legislature party meetings must quarantine for five days, and are therefore unable to attend tomorrow’s important session. The Government of Punjab in this case should not hold any substantive discussions on these issues without the Opposition.
I urge the Congress Leadership and the Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha to allow for more sittings of this session to allow for MLA’s to complete their quarantine protocols and attend these significant discussions. This should be done to protect the interests of the people of Punjab.
