Pakistan envoy meets UNGA President, discusses Kashmir

New York, Aug 27 , 2019-

Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi met the President of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Maria Fernanda Espinosa in New York on Monday and briefed her on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to reports in the Pakistani media, Lodhi told the UNGA president in detail about alleged human rights violations in Kashmir, even as the valley entered its 23rd day of curfew and communications blackout.

After meeting the UNGA President, Lodhi tweeted: “Met Maria Fernanda Espinosa, President of UN General Assembly & briefed her about the grave situation in Kashmir where the continuing curfew & lockdown is exacerbating the suffering of the people. UN should live up to its obligations on Kashmir.”

This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump in France on the sidelines of the G7 summit and discussed Kashmir. Modi told Trump that the situation in Kashmir is under control. He also said that revoking Article 370 of the Constitution is India’s internal matter.

Following the meeting, Trump also cleared the air on his controversial claim that Modi had asked for his mediation on Kashmir, saying that India and Pakistan could bilaterally do something “very good”.  (Agency)
