BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has come under sharp criticism from Opposition leaders after her remarks targeting Gen Z protesters sparked a political row, with Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders accusing her of making insensitive comments and questioning her understanding of democratic movements.
The controversy erupted after Ranaut criticised the language and conduct of young demonstrators participating in protests, including those held at Jantar Mantar, over issues such as alleged examination paper leaks. In a social media post, she described videos of the protests as “puke-inducing” and criticised what she called the tone and language used by the protesters.
Responding to her comments, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain said Ranaut’s statements should not be taken seriously, alleging that she lacked knowledge of student movements, democracy and democratic traditions.
“Nobody takes her seriously. She has no understanding of students’ movements, democracy or the democratic way of life. She keeps making baseless statements,” Hussain said.
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat also criticised the BJP MP, citing her previous controversial remarks to question her political credibility.
He said Ranaut may be a successful actress but had repeatedly made statements that reflected a lack of political understanding, referring to her past comments on India’s Independence and freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose. Bhagat further claimed that even the BJP did not attach much importance to her statements.
Samajwadi Party leader Udaiveer Singh echoed similar sentiments, saying Ranaut’s political experience was limited despite her election to Parliament.
According to Singh, political parties often field film personalities as candidates to attract voters, but electoral success does not automatically translate into political understanding. He added that her remarks should be viewed in the context of her political experience.
Ranaut’s comments have intensified the political debate, with Opposition parties accusing her of targeting young protesters instead of addressing their concerns over alleged examination paper leaks.
