Opening Ceremony of Sikh Football Cup on Nov 23 at Amritsar

Opening ceremony of first ‘Sikh Football Cup’, dedicated to 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Ji will be held on November 23 at Amritsar. State level finals and closing ceremony will be organized on December 7 at S.A.S. Nagar.

Disclosing this here today Khalsa Football Club (Khalsa FC) president Harjeet Singh Grewal said this event is being organised by Khalsa FC in association with Global Sikh Sports Federation (GSSF). He informed that Keshadari (Unshorn hairs & beard) players from the age of 14 to 21 years will take part in this inter-district tournament to be held under the FIFA rules.

He further informed that the Khalsa FC, affiliated to Punjab Football Association, have conducted selection trials in all 22 districts of Punjab whereas Chandigarh team will be selected on November 5 during trials in football stadium sector 42.

While highlighting the benefits for players, Grewal added that Khalsa FC would provide sports kits, jerseys and track suits to all participating 23 Kesdahari (Sabat-soorat) teams. “The winning team will be awarded with cash prize of Rs 5 lakh and runner up to take away Rs 3 lakh. In addition, coaches of both teams will also be honored with cash prizes of Rs 51,000 and Rs 31,000 respectively”, he added.

Elaborating more football promoter Grewal said the martial art ‘Gatka’ teams would also perform their skills during all football matches. He informed that the Sikh Football Cup would be organized every year in association with Punjab Sports Department and Punjab Football Association. “The Khalsa FC would serve as a platform for football players so that they could strike cords with the popular football clubs”, he added.

He further said this annual event would promote Punjabi culture and Sikh identity across the globe. In addition, this Football Cup would also help young boys to overcome drug abuse and return to their sporting activities. Besides, the players would be able to brighten their future by adopting football as a profession, hFCe said.
