Ontario’s Sikh Community Gearing up to celebrate Guru Nanak’s 550th Gurpurab

Brampton, Ontario, October 18, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

This year marks the 550th Gurpurab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru of the Sikh faith. To mark this momentous occasion, the Ontario Gurdwaras Committee (OGC) is hosting engaging events and activities across the province, in addition to the Gurpurab celebrations being held at Gurdwaras.

There will be ‘Guru Nanak 550’ Tree Planting events for the community to participate in part of the 1 million trees campaign by global Sikh community. The OGC has partnered with EcoSikh Canada, Khalsa Aid, City of Brampton and the Town of Oakville to facilitate the planting of 550 trees at each event in honour of the Guru’s 550th Gurpurab.

Sikhi inspires us to respect and protect the environment, an intrinsic aspect of Sikhi that began with Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s vision. There will be three days for the community to participate:

1. Saturday October 26th at the Clairville Conservation Area in Brampton

2. Saturday November 2nd at the Gore Meadows Community Centre and

3. Saturday November 9th at the City of Oakville – Shell Park.

In addition to the tree planting initiative, the OGC has organized a lecture series in celebration of the 550th Gurpurab. Beginning October 19th and continuing every Saturday and Sunday until November 17th, various guest speakers will provide informative and engaging presentations and talks related to Sikhi and Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The lectures will take place at Louise Arbour Secondary School in Brampton.

As part of our lecture series, the OGC is partnering with the David Suzuki Foundation to organize 905 Talks Climate, an event about climate change with guest speaker David Suzuki on Monday, November 4th at 7 p.m. at Brampton City Hall.

The OGC is proud to be supporting and facilitating these initiatives, which were spearheaded by members of the Sangat. The community has come together to find meaningful ways to mark Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th Gurpurab. This is an opportunity to engage with the youth in our community and to provide them with a space to learn, explore and lead and while connecting them with the teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Sikhi.

The OGC looks forward to witnessing the success of these events and building on the relationships formed with the various partner organizations.
