One-day Punjab Assembly Monsoon session, mockery of Constitution: Bhagwant Mann

Chandigarh, August 18, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state president and Member of Parliament (MP) Bhagwant Mann, while sharply reacting to the convening of a one-day Monsoon session of Punjab Assembly on August 28, has termed it as a ploy of the government in the saddle to run away from discussing the core issues and concerns the state was wrestling with.

Interacting with the media through video conferencing on Tuesday, Bhagwant Mann said Punjab had been facing serious issues and concerns, including the unprecedented spike in the incidents of Covid-19 epidemic, mafia rule rampant in the state, ghar-ghar jobs, loan waivers to farmers, debt-related suicides, et al, which needed to be addressed by the government, adding that it was trying to run away from the questions likely to be asked by the principal opposition party (AAP) on the floor of the House.

He added that the Assemblies and Parliament were the platform where elected members could raise the issues and concerns of their respective states and constituencies, alleging by reducing the session to a mere day, the government had made mockery of the Constitution.

Showing newspaper clipping to dating back to September 13, 2016, Mann said when the SAD-BJP government was in power and the Congress was the principal Opposition Party, when Congress MLAs, including Sunil Jakhar and others had protested against the ‘short’ Assembly session and decided to sleep on the floor till the time of the session was enhanced to debate issues, asking “Will Congress president and other Congress party leaders ask the CM over the convening of one-day session. Will they ask him to extend the session further?”

Mann questioned “If the government in the saddle shies away from taking questions on the liquor mafia rampant in the state, mismanagement of Covid-19 pandemic, the deadly anti-farm ordinances pushed in by the union government, et al, who will address them”. Mann questioned “What can be achieved in a one-day long session, which would, as a matter of fact, last for 5 hours approximately, after the obituary references, et al, when the issues awaiting discussion are many”.

Mann reiterated that CM had given an assurance to members in the Assembly that a special session would be convened to abrogate the anti-farm ordinances, a promise which had remained unkempt, like a host of others that he pedaled ahead of the 2017 elections.

The AAP MP urged the Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to extend the upcoming Monsoon session so that the core issues and concerns of surrounding Punjab and its people were discussed and debated threadbare, taking them to a conclusive end. He threatened the government that if nothing came out of the discourse, the AAP would again storm his Siswan farmhouse in times to come.
