The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today said there was no space for those leaders who had launched a programme against the party in its head office here, asserting party workers would not tolerate such elements.
Senior party leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema made this statement while addressing newsmen after participating in a series of meetings with senior party leaders, district presidents and Shiromani Committee members at the party head office here.
Asserting that the party head office was for everyone, Dr Daljit Cheema said “party president Sukhbir Singh Badal held a number of meetings of the party’s constituency incharges, District presidents and various wings including the Istri Akali Dal, Scheduled Caste and Backward Castes wings and the Youth Akali Dal besides interacting with members of the Shiromani Committee recently.
“Leaders who are allowing themselves to be addressed as rebels of the SAD did not attend the meetings even though an open invitation had been sent to all. Now when they have launched an agitation against their own party they are laying claim to hold meetings at the party office here. There is no space for them here”.
The SAD leader made it clear that the party had a constitution and an elected president in S Sukhbir Singh Badal. “The President is elected through a democratic process as per laid down norms. The party office is also run as per the guidelines given by the president. You cannot challenge the leadership of the party president and then lay claim to the party office”.
Meanwhile, giving details of the meetings held today, Dr Cheema said a meeting was held to galvanize party workers for enrolling voters for the ensuing Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee elections.
“Party leaders gave suggestions in this regard and it was decided to make efforts to ensure maximum enrolment of voters in the coming days”.
He said a separate meeting was also held to delegate duties to party leaders for the forthcoming byelections in four constituencies. “Coordination Committees have been formed for this task”, he said adding a separate Youth Akali Dal (YAD) meeting was also held.
Dr Cheema said today further meetings would be held in the coming days on both issues as only party leaders from constituencies close to the State capital had been called for today’s meeting.
