No move to back out of Vidhan Sabha resolution on naming Adampur Airport after Guru Ravidass, clarifies Punjab Govt

Chandigarh, June 29

The Punjab Government has clarified that it merely proposed to change the location name of the Adampur airport to Jalandhar airport, and had no intention of renaming the airport itself.

An official spokesperson said on Saturday that the airport would be named after Sri Guru Ravidass ji, as resolved by the present Vidhan Sabha, and there was no move to retract on the resolution.

The clarification came after some media reports incorrectly interpreted Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s request to the Union Civil Aviation Minister to approve change of location name to Jalandhar. The Chief Minister’s request came in response to a demand to this effect by NRIs and international tourists, most of whom easily related to the name Jalandhar, which was a bigger and more well-known city, compared with Adampur.

Adampur was earlier only an Air Force base, and though IAF recently gave permission for use of the base for civilian flights, it continued to be called the Adampur Airport, which most NRIs and tourists seeking to visit Punjab could not identify with, said the spokesperson.
