Nirbhaya case: How postmortem of execution is conducted

New Delhi, March 20, 2020-

Bodies of the four convicts in Nirbhaya rape and murder case were sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital here at 8 a.m. on Friday after they were exectued at 5.30 a.m.

A panel of five doctors conducted the postmortem of the bodies. The panel headed by B.N. Mishra included V.K. Ranga, Jatin Vodwal, R.K. Chaubey and Ajit.

In an interview, Mishra said: “It will take around four to five hours to conduct the postmortem of all the four bodies. The whole process is filmed.”

On the difference between the bodies of the people executed and those who commit suicide, he said: “When a trained hangman executes someone, the neck bone breaks in a different manner while if someone commits suicide it breaks differently. ‘Brain stem with instant’ is thoroughly examined in the bodies which are executed.”

“When a person is executed, his neck bone breaks instantly due to which he faints first and then dies after a few seconds,” he added.

When asked that whether the execution was conducted as per the jail manual, he said: “To understand this, we need to see examine the heart. If the heart was still beating after 15-20 minutes of execution then the forensic science believes that the execution was proper.”  (Agency)
