National Bridge Tourney opens in Chandigarh, Asian Gold Medalist joins Championship

The 10th Steel Strips Open Bridge Championship opened today at Hyatt Regency Chandigarh today. Twentynine teams from Punjab, Haryana, Uttrakhand, UP, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, and Chandigarh, are participating in this three days event, said H.S. Dhariwal, President of the Chandigarh Bridge Association.

Chairman of the Steel Strips Group R.K. Garg greeted nearly 130 participants from across the country and formally inaugurated the championship by lighting the lamp.

Many stalwarts of the game including several of those who represented India in various international events included Asian Games 2018 Gold Medal winner S.N. De Sarkar from Kolkata, Subhash Gupta and Rajeshwar Tiwari from New Delhi; Jagi Sivdasan from Mumbai, Pritish Kushari from Kolkata, J.M. Shah of Mumbai, Swarnendu Banerji from Kolkata, T.C. Pant, Joint Secretary of the Bridge Federation of India, amongst others.

Held under the aegis of Bridge Federation of India (BFI) with their two registered Directors (umpires), Sanjay Chakravarty and M.L. Pangotra, are conducting the championship.

Bridge is a game of cards which requires not luck but high intelligence and skills, and is considered more advanced than chess in many ways, and is wrongly construed as gambling, said the chairman of Steel Strps Group R.K. Garg.

H.S. Dhariwal informed that CBA is trying to popularise this international game amongst youngsters and others, by organising training sessions in the Sector 42 stadium where trainers hold daily sessions from 2pm to 4pm.

This is an international sport and Indian pair obagged men’s pairs gold medal in Bridge in the 2018 Asian Games.

Results: In the first three qualifying rounds, eight teams have topped the list which included a mixed team of Dr. Sanghi with players from Kolkata, Delhi, and Patna topped the score board with 50.26, while the Steel Strips Group team stands second with score and another Chandigarh group called Engineers, took the third position with 40.97.

However, the eight teams shall qualify after the seven rounds to be completed by tomorrow.
