Satnam Singh Chahal, Executive Director of the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), strongly condemned the brutal lathi-charge on peaceful protestors in Chandigarh who were demonstrating against the Union Government’s attempts to take administrative and financial control of Punjab University.
Chahal stated that this high-handed and undemocratic action by the authorities is not only an assault on the people’s right to protest but also a direct attack on Punjab’s academic autonomy and identity. He said that Punjab University has always been a symbol of the state’s intellectual heritage and cultural pride, and any effort to snatch it from Punjab’s control will be strongly resisted by Punjabis across the globe.
“The Union Government’s move to centralize Punjab University is an attempt to undermine the federal structure of India and weaken Punjab’s rights over its institutions,” Chahal said. “Instead of addressing the legitimate concerns of students, teachers, and citizens, the government has resorted to violence and intimidation, which is unacceptable in a democratic society.”
NAPA expresses full solidarity and support to all students, teachers, and members of the public who are courageously standing up for Punjab’s rights and for the preservation of Punjab University’s independent and historic character.
Chahal urged both the Punjab Government and the Union Government to immediately stop suppressing peaceful voices, withdraw police action, and hold open dialogue with the stakeholders to resolve the issue in a democratic and respectful manner.
He further appealed to all Punjabis, both in India and abroad, to stay united in defending Punjab’s educational and cultural institutions from political interference and central domination.
