A 55-year-old passenger was detained at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after allegedly making a joking remark about carrying a “bomb” in his bag, triggering a security alert and temporarily delaying an IndiGo flight to Delhi.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the boarding gate of Terminal 2. The passenger, identified as Anuj Jayram Suvarna, was undergoing routine hand-baggage screening when he allegedly responded to a security query by casually saying that his bag contained a bomb.
Airline Assistant Security Manager Omprakash Rajbhar and Security Officer Ravindra Rokde were checking passengers’ hand luggage and asking about prohibited items such as matches, lighters, scissors and liquids when Suvarna made the remark.
The airline staff immediately alerted their superiors and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel. Suvarna was removed from the flight and handed over to the Sahar police.
According to officials, the passenger told police during questioning that he had made the comment as a joke. Police registered a case on the complaint of the airline security officers and arrested him. He was subsequently released after being served a warning notice, while further inquiry into the incident is underway.
The remark triggered extensive security procedures. The aircraft was evacuated and all passengers were deplaned. CISF personnel, along with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), carried out detailed checks of the aircraft, cargo and passenger baggage.
No suspicious material was found during the searches, following which the flight was cleared for departure to Delhi after several hours.
Officials said the incident caused panic among passengers and disrupted flight operations, besides causing financial and mental distress to the airline.
