Chandigarh, 28 July 2020 (Yes Punjab News)
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab President and Member of Parliament (MP) Bhagwant Mann, reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s evincing his keenness in running the Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant at Bathinda with straw, has made a fervent appeal to him (Prime Minister) to intervene in the matter and stop demolition of the plant dedicated to the first Sikh master Guru Nanak Dev.
In a statement issued from party headquarters on Tuesday, Bhagwant Mann, through a letter to the Prime Minister, apprised him of what he described as disastrous decisions, taken by the government from time to time since the establishment of the historic thermal plant.
Bhagwant Mann has demanded that the Prime Minister should immediately intervene in the matter and stop the process of e-tender floated by the Punjab government for the demolition of four units of the thermal plant, which were scheduled to be opened on August 20, 2020.
Elaborating on the economic, social, heritage and religious sentiments of the people associated with the Bathinda Thermal Plant, Bhagwant Mann clarified to the Prime Minister, through the letter, that if these thermal units were converted into straw (biomass) units with the financial assistance of the union government, it would prove to be beneficial not only to the farmers but also for environment and ecology, offering the farmers a lucrative alternative to the forced burning of crop residue.
Mann said the Prime Minister should immediately stop the process of demolition of this thermal plant by the Punjab government and explore possibilities to rehabilitate the thermal plant and run it with straw and solar energy, sooner than later.
The AAP MP said that the discussion held between the top brass of the Union Government and the Power Com in February last year and the status of running it with straw was reviewed, which had ignited a hope among the people of Punjab in general and the area in particular.
