The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has demanded immediate reduction of taxes on diesel and other petroleum products to provide succor to the farm sector.
In a statement issued from party headquarters, state Kisan Wing president Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Manjeet Singh Bilaspur and Jai Krishan Singh Rouri (All MLAs) said that the heat due of the unannounced power cuts and paucity of rains had already taken a heavy toll on the beleaguered farming community, which was wrestling with other serious challenges, saying the Central and State Governments should immediately address their woes, by reducing the central and state taxes on diesel, besides ensuring uninterrupted supply of canal water for irrigation purposes and uninterrupted supply of power to the farmers.
Kultar Singh Sandhwan said the people of the country were reeling under the uncontrollable inflation with the Corona epidemic exacerbating their financial worries, saying amid the global crisis, the governments around the world were announcing massive relief packages to bail out citizens from the acute financial crisis.
They were initiating steps to rein in the rising inflation, by reducing the prices of diesel and other petroleum products substantially in view of the steep fall in prices of crude oil at the international market, while our Central and Punjab Government were constantly jacking up the prices of diesel and petrol, which, he described as an anti-people and reprehensible move on their part.
Jai Shishan Singh Rori and Manjit Singh Bilaspur demanded that the Central and State Governments should immediately reduce their taxes on diesel in the interest of the farmers across the country, which was 60 to 70 per cent higher than the actual price of the petroleum products.
The AAP leaders termed the statements made by Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal and Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on diesel and petrol prices as a mere political ploy to grab eyeballs, saying that Harsimrat Kaur Badal should have stood rock-solid in favour of the farmers and open a front against the anti-farmer Modi government, instead playing her political cards to protect her ministerial berth, while the Capt Amarinder Singh government should come to the rescue of the farmers and provide immediate relief to the farmers by reducing the state’s VAT on diesel.
The AAP MLAs demanded that the Capt. Government should initiate steps to stop unannounced power cuts in power supply to domestic consumers and agricultural sector and ensure an uninterrupted canal water supply to the tail end for irrigation purposes so that the farmers could cultivate crops, vegetables et al without diesel.
