Manish Tewari seeks representation of Chandigarh in Rajya Sabha

Chandigarh, December 4, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
Shri Anandpur Sahib MP and National Spokesperson of the Congress, Manish Tewari has sought representation for the union territory of Chandigarh in the Rajya Sabha, as it has remained unrepresented in the upper house so far.

Tewari presented a Private Member’s Bill in the Lok Sabha in this regard and urged the Union Home Minister Amit Shah that this bill may be taken up as a government bill since it relates to providing representation to a union territory in the Upper House of the parliament.

The Congress MP said, the constitution of India provides for representation to the union territories in the Council of States (Upper House) in such a manner as the Parliament may by law prescribe.

He suggested that the members of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation can constitute the electoral college for electing the Rajya Sabha member from Chandigarh on the same pattern as the Delhi Metropolitan Council served as the electoral college for electing three persons to the Council of States from Delhi from 1966 to 1990.

While the union territories of Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir are duly represented in the Rajya Sabha, others like Chandigarh, Ladakh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep remain unrepresented.

However the bill presented by Tewari in the parliament specifically seeks representation for Chandigarh in the Rajya Sabha.
