Manish Tewari moots Mass Rapid Transport System between Chandigarh, Ambala & Mohali

Chandigarh, November 3, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

Congress National Spokesperson and Anandpur Sahib MP Manish Tewari has suggested setting up Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) connecting Chandigarh, Ambala, Mohali, Panchkula and other townships in the periphery saying, it will help in the accelerating the industrialisation of the area.

In a letter to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, Tewari said, cities of Ambala, Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, New Chandigarh, Kharar and Kurali have the potential of becoming a throbbing hub of innovation, enterprise and the driving engine of the Fourth Industrial Revolution premised upon Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Data Analytics.

He said, to fulfill this objective these cities require seamless interconnectivity. “The best way to achieve that is through MRTS that is both overground and underground”, he added.

Tewari said, the road distance from Ambala to Kurali is about 59 Kms which could become one salient of the MRTS while the other salient could be Landran to Panchkula that is about 32 kms. He said, it would require coordination between his Ministry, Railways, Urban Development and the State Governments of Punjab, Haryana and Union Territory of Chandigarh.

He urged the minister to get a pre-feasibility study commissioned since India’s development must be looked at in a two-decade perspective at least. “It would also perhaps be a good idea to get all the stakeholders on board and set up a dedicated Inter- Ministerial Group involving the State Governments for this purpose”, he added.

Tewari said, he will be sending copies of this letter to the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana as well as his MP colleagues who represent the Parliamentary Constituencies of Ambala and Chandigarh.
