The Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Thursday, marking the conclusion of the Monsoon Session after the National Song, Vande Mataram, was recited in the House.
The proceedings began on a stormy note as Opposition members raised slogans and displayed placards while seeking answers from the government. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla appealed to the members to maintain order and urged them to stand for the recitation of the National Song.
During the 3.10-minute-long recitation, MPs from both the Treasury and Opposition benches stood in respect, with some members also singing along. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were present in the House during the proceedings.
The recitation came days after Presidential assent to the legislation granting Vande Mataram the same statutory protection as the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana. Parliament had passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, last month. Under the law, offences can attract imprisonment of up to three years, a fine, or both.
The Monsoon Session, held from July 20 to August 13, was marked by repeated Government-Opposition confrontations, with relatively limited legislative business being conducted.
Among the key measures cleared by the Lok Sabha were the NEET Amendment Bill and taxation-related legislation, while the FCRA amendment bill was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.
The full recitation of Vande Mataram also followed Home Ministry guidelines issued in February, under which all six stanzas of the National Song were made mandatory at official functions and gatherings, with protocols similar to those followed for the National Anthem.
