Eminent singer-composer and revered music mentor Ustad Pooran Shahkoti passed away here today at the age of 85 after a brief illness. He breathed his last at his residence in Jalandhar, the very place where he devoted decades of his life to nurturing and refining musical talent.
Ustad Pooran Shahkoti was the father of renowned Bollywood playback singer Master Saleem and Peji Shahkoti, and the guru of several celebrated Punjabi singers. Among his most prominent disciples were legendary vocalist Hans Raj Hans, popular singer Jasbir Jassi, and Sabarkoti, all of whom carved distinguished careers under his guidance.
Widely respected for his humility and dedication, Ustad Pooran Shahkoti chose to remain behind the scenes, finding fulfillment in the success of his shagirds rather than personal acclaim. Known for his deep understanding of classical and folk traditions, he played a pivotal role in shaping modern Punjabi music by blending discipline, tradition, and emotional expression.
