Led by Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma, Commissioner of Police Mr. Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Navjot Singh Mahal hundreds of district residents today unequivocally pledged that as responsible citizens of the state they would make concerted efforts to make Jalandhar a drug free district.
In an impressive function held at the Red Cross Bhawan here today to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illegal Trafficking, the Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police administered this oath to hundreds of city residents who have converged on the occasion.
The residents vowed to support every endeavor being made by the Punjab government led by the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and district administration to eliminate the scourge of drugs from the district. The volunteers also said that every effort would be made to bring the drug dependents on the mainstream so that they could contribute in socio-economic growth of the state.
In their address, the Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police appealed the people wage a relentless battle against scourge of drugs till its last ounce was not removed from the district. Soliciting fulsome support and cooperation of people in this pious mission of the state government, they said that this initiative was aimed at complete eradication of drugs from the district.
The officers said that no such program could achieve success without the active support and cooperation of people.
The Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police also appealed the parents and kin of the drug dependents to shun social stigma attached with this problem and come forward for treatment of their dear ones. They said that DAPO program aims at persuading the addicted youth to take proper treatment so that they could also lead a normal life like others and contribute immensely in socio-economic growth of the state.
The officers said that Punjabis have been blessed with indomitable spirit to excel even in hostile conditions adding that now time has come when everyone should join hand for making Jalandhar drug free.
The Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police said that drug addicts were not criminals and were infact victims, which need to be brought into the main fray through such initiatives.
They said that massive efforts have already been made to cut the supply line of drugs but perhaps for the first time in the globe a serious effort was being made to check the demand of drugs by motivating the people to be partners in this cause by DAPO and Buddy programs.
They said that said that these programs aim at motivating the drug users and their families to avail treatment facilities besides facilitating their treatment and counseling at drug de-addiction centres besides provide feedback to the state government on the issue.
They said that the state government intends to create a mass movement against the drugs through an army of volunteers above the age of 18 years in every Mohalla/ Ward/ Village of the district. On the occasion students of Government Senior Secondary School Gakhal sensitized the people about issue of drugs through play and other cultural items.
On the occasion Additional Deputy Commissioner Mr. Jasbir Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Gurmeet Singh, Civil Surgeon Dr. Gurinder Chawla and Dr. Aman Sood also addressed the gathering.
